Charitable Causes

The owner of Quietly Making Noise, LLC is committed to giving back to charitable causes near to her heart. Two primary organizations which benefit through donations of time and money from QMN are the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and Give Kids the World.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation annually hosts its current and past scholars at the Astronaut Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. The scholars are pictured (above right) at the Mercury 7 Monument near Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF)

More than 70 astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Shuttle programs are helping the United States retain its world leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships for college students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major. To date, the foundation has awarded nearly $2.5 million in scholarships to 226 deserving students.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1984 by the six surviving original Mercury 7 astronauts, Betty Grissom (widow of the seventh, Gus Grissom), Henri Landwirth (see below), and Dr. Bill Douglas, the Mercury 7 flight surgeon. Lisa Schott, owner of QMN, serves on the Board of Directors of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and is Founder and President of ASF's alumni group, the Astronaut Scholars Honor Society. She received the scholarship award from 1987-1990 while studying at Georgia Tech and has been a tireless volunteer since then. Lisa organizes an annual convention in Florida, where current and past scholarship winners meet each other and astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs. Through these activities, a strong network of some of the leading young scientists and engineers in America has formed.

The ASF Board of Directors is: Al Worden (Chairman), Robert Crippen (Vice Chairman), Michael Neukamm (Treasurer / Secretary), Linn LeBlanc (Executive Director), James A. Lovell (Chairman Emeritus), Larry Bradley, Dan Brandenstein, Scott Carpenter, Walt Cunningham, Charlie Duke, Owen K. Garriott, John Glenn, Richard Gordon, Rick Hauck, Harvey A. Miller, Edgar Mitchell, and Lisa Schott.

Give Kids the World (GKTW)

Give Kids the World is a 51 acre, non-profit resort for children with life-threatening illnesses whose one wish is to visit Central Florida's best loved attractions. Volunteers at GKTW adhere to beliefs such as the following:

"You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
-Winston Churchill
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."
-Anne Frank

GKTW was founded by Mr. Henri Landwirth, a survivor of several Nazi death camps and labor camps including Auschwitz, Matthausen, and Ostrowitz. At the end of the war, Henri was marched into the woods to be shot, but at the last minute a Nazi soldier decided to spare his life, and told him to run. The miracle that saved Henri's life and his subsequent incredible life journey brought him to America and eventually led him to become a very successful businessman and friend to the original Mercury 7 astronauts. Lisa Schott, owner of QMN, met Henri through the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. He has been such an inspiration to Lisa, that she began volunteering at the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida in 1999.

GKTW Village serves more than 5,000 families each year, providing a free week-long vacation in Orlando, Florida. Lisa can be seen around the Village on a regular basis. However, you might not always recognize her. At times, she might look like the photo at the top of this article.
